Community Service. Philanthropy. Giving Back. Serving Others.
Whatever you call it, it's one of the most important things an organization can do. Supporting the people and community is what makes business and commerce possible. At Melco, we're building a strong sense of community, camaraderie, and friendship by encouraging every employee to take time off specifically to volunteer. On top of that, Melco as an organization has made a priority of finding ways to help the local Colorado community by donating to organizations such as JDRF, The Tennyson Center for Children, and others.
This page is anything but a bragging board! It serves as a way for people to encourage more volunteering and community service by sharing some things that employees do or have done, and Melco as a whole has done, to give back.
We hope you find some inspiration here, and also check out these additional resources:
- Visit www.volunteermatch.org. This is a great resource for finding organizations that need volunteers. You can sign up for notifications in the locations and areas that interest you.
- One of the organizations that needs volunteers is actually right next door to us! The Center at Northridge is currently in need of volunteers.
- Food Bank of the Rockies is a great organization serving a large portion of Colorado. There are opportunities to volunteer every day of the week except Sunday and they are closed the last day of the month for inventory.
- Foothills Animal Shelter has volunteer opportunities for animal lovers! They are located in Golden.
Power of One Charity is a non-profit organization created by Judi Dollaghan Madsen on behalf of her son, Andrew J. Dollaghan. Andrew was tragically killed in a car accident in 2008. Since 2010, The Power of One Charity has provided over $85,000.00 to students needing financial assistance for college! 2019 has been one of the biggest years yet, with $15,000 in donations thus far.
A close friend of Andy, Misti Shaw (Melco Sales Administrator), had this to say: "Andy was a very close and dear friend of mine. It was devasting when he passed! His mom, Judi, is one strong, fierce mama! To help encourage donations for the Power of One Charity, and fund the scholarship program, Judi has organized a yearly golf tournament. 2019 was the 9th year! I love being apart of this awesome charity to help high school graduates expand their education and reach the stars!"

If fitness is your thing, you should know about the Brute Force Mile! This event is growing in popularity, and for 2019, Brute Force Training partnered with Team RWB to raise money and support America's veterans. Here's what Justin Schierkolk, Melco's Marketing Manager, had to say about this event:
"Brute Force Training is an awesome local organization! I've been using their fitness sandbags for a few years, so when they announced this opportunity to build a team, raise money for vets, and get a killer workout in all at the same time, I was in! I had never heard of Team RWB before this event. Now, I will find ways to support them however possible. I encourage everyone to take a look at their website to learn more about how they help support those that choose to serve our country."
The 2019 Brute Force Mile took place during the first week of July. However, during the weeks leading up to the event, they release a series of workouts designed to get participants ready for the big day. Most of these training sessions can be done in less than 30 minutes, and consist of running, bodyweight exercises, and of course training with a sandbag. Check out these links to learn more:
Just before Christmas, Melco's Marketing Manager Justin Schierkolk organized a volunteer team to support a build day with Habitat for Humanity of the St. Vrain Valley. "I love working with my hands to help others!" says Justin. "Owning a home is a dream for many people, and for some of those people, simply not possible without a little bit of help. In this case, many homeowners were displaced during floods that happened in the fall of 2013, and those folks are still rebuilding, or trying to find a permanent place to live all these years later."

In September of 2018, Melco participated in the JDRF One Walk, and event organized to raise awareness and help fund research for a cure to Type 1 Diabetes.
"I could not be more proud that Melco is making a difference in the lives of people living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) by supporting JDRF One Walk® as a Bronze Level Sponsor and Walk team!" says Melco's President, Dale Sanders, "This is a great organization making a real impact on finding a way to cure Type-1 diabetes. It’s through efforts from companies like us at Melco that a life without diabetes is a potential for many children and adults who suffer from this disease. I am a firm believer in doing what we can as an organization to give back to the community and to be more active in charitable organizations and events. As many of you know, my family has been impacted by this disease since 1996 when our son was diagnosed at the age of 5. He’s now 27, but still struggles with the complications this has had on his life."
The event was a success, and gave opportunity for several employees at Melco to volunteer for a great cause. According to Karen Vernon, head of Accounting at Melco, "The weather was perfect an it was a really nice walk. It was also nice to get to know more Melco team members!"
