Melco is proud to participate and sponsor a team for the 2019 JDRF One Walk at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds near Denver, Colorado. JDRF was established to help fight Type 1 Diabetes, a disease that affects about 1.25 million Americans. The purpose of this event is to raise awareness and help fund research for prevention and a cure for Type 1 Diabetes.
So, what exactly is Type 1 Diabetes? According to the JDRF website: "Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease that strikes both children and adults suddenly. It has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. There is nothing you can do to prevent it. And, at present, there is no cure."
For Dale Sanders, CEO of Melco International, Type 1 diabetes struck close to home many years ago when his son Zacary was diagnosed at a very young age. He chose to take action, and has been involved with JDRF for over 20 years. Here is some of his personal story:
"My involvement with JDRF started in 1997 when my 5-year old son Zacary was diagnosed with Type One diabetes. At that time, I knew absolutely NOTHING about Type One diabetes and was totally confused as to what it meant. My first reaction was “Can't be, he never eats candy!” Needless to say, from that day forward, it was a steep learning curve regarding his disease. After going through the pains of a parent dealing with multiple blood checks and insulin injections, we decided it was time to get involved and find a way to help find a cure.
That is where I was introduced to JDRF. In the early days, we formed a family Walk team called “Zac’s Dream Team”. It was a great way to pull our friends and family together to support both JDRF and Zacary in the fight against Type One diabetes. Shortly after our first walk, I joined the Walk committee to help prepare and support the annual walk program in Milwaukee. I was an active member of the committee and eventual co-captain of the program, which drew over 5,000 walkers on the event day. After spending several years leading the walk program as a volunteer I became a board member—eventually being named Chapter President.
I had the opportunity as Chapter president to discuss funding and research needs in Washington DC with our congressmen and senators—helping to secure support for the National Institute of Health (NIH). JDRF is an amazing organization that leads a global movement in research and advocacy that is changing lives. Their continuous approach to research and cure therapeutics makes them one of the leaders in funding and support for diabetes.
I also participated 3 years in the Ride to Cure program in Death Valley and an additional 7 years as a coach to help others ride 100 miles in Death Valley to raise money for JDRF. My son Zacary did his first ride in Death Valley at the age of 13 and has subsequently done the ride 4 times with me! JDRF now has 6 rides they sponsor around the USA, including one right here in Sunny Loveland CO. There is really nothing like seeing several hundred people, young and old, taking on a bike challenge in support of the goal to raise money and awareness for Juvenile Diabetes research.
Since moving to Colorado in 2016, I have been a member of the Board of Directors for the JDRF Rocky Mountain Chapter. I am very proud of the support and participation Melco International will have in helping support JDRF in 2019 through our walk and ride programs."
